The Fulton County Board of Commissioners affirmed its commitment to property tax relief Wednesday, Jan. 8, voting unanimously to opt into a new floating homestead exemption as newly authorized by House Bill 581.
“We want to be clear that Fulton County is committed to property tax relief for homeowners,” said Chairman Robb Pitts. “Our action today will ensure that they get the best deal possible.”
The exemption is “floating” because its value can increase each year to offset the effect of inflation, as determined by the state revenue commissioner.
The Fulton County Board of Assessors will automatically calculate and apply whichever available exemption provides the most benefit for the property owner, whether they already have a homestead exemption in place or are applying for the first time.
“While Fulton County has had a floating homestead exemption in place for 20 years, HB 581 offers an option that may be more advantageous for some homeowners,” Vice Chair Bob Ellis said.
All homeowners who have a Fulton County homestead exemption in place automatically receive a floating homestead exemption. For those receiving the new floating exemption in the 2025 tax year, the property’s assessed value in 2024 will determine the exemption’s base value.
Only one floating homestead exemption may be applied to each residential bill. The floating exemption can, however, be added to other non-floating homestead exemptions.
The deadline for Homestead Exemptions is April 1 each year. Property owners can apply for a homestead exemption in any office of the Fulton County Board of Assessors or online at
