Berean Christian Junior Academy hosted Shanequa Gay at the Darnell Aviation Museum. Hear more from Artist Shanequa Gay. We spoke about my exhibition here called Psalms for Black Girls or Black Girl Psalms. The young ladies came in and they were overwhelmed which was like the best gift. We talked about scale, size of the images, and the importance of seeing black girls in a large monumental exhibition. We also talked about the media, the reasoning behind artwork being black and white, artwork that is archival, and work in the contemporary. The message I am relaying is the importance of black girls. While my cast is black girls and women normally, the purpose of the artwork is to talk about the citizenship of children and their importance not as second class citizens, but they are a part of the fabric of this nation just as much as anyone else.
