Safety is the Watch Word for the Start of Pool Season

During the July 4th holiday, those heading out to swim should do so with caution
Those families heading to their local pools this upcoming holiday weekend should never lose sight of safety as they enjoy time in the water. The Environmental Health division of the Fulton County Board of Health (FCBOH) suggests that families take safety precautions around their local pool to fully enjoy fun in the sun.
“We want to make sure that everyone has a happy and safe holiday around the water,” says FCBOH Environmental Health Director Dr. Brandon Leftwich. “There are a few helpful things that parents can do to keep the fun going.”
To ensure a fun and incident-free holiday weekend, take these simple steps:
• Always supervise children when they're in or around water and maintain the "buddy system" to keep an eye out for others
• If a child goes missing, check the pool first by searching the entire pool area, including the bottom and surface
• Ensure entry gates are closed when leaving the pool to prevent unsolicited entry of children.
• Identify where all lifesaving equipment is located (most public pools have emergency phones installed within the pool enclosure)
• Learn CPR and ensure that babysitters, grandparents, and other caregivers know how to perform it
• Stay away from drains and suction outlets of the pool to prevent from getting trapped
• Remove toys from the pool area when not in use to avoid attracting children
• Learn to swim and never swim under the influence
