Intergovernmental Affairs Division Manager Fran Calhoun gives an update on the crossover day of the 2023 Georgia legislative session. Hear about some of the bills passed from Fran Calhoun. Legislators moved quickly to pass the FY 2023 amended budget and the House has already sent the FY 2024 budget to Senate. House Bill 520 will prevent housing discrimination, perform a statewide bed study, pilot program for jail screening, and recruit mental health workers for student loan forgiveness. Another groundbreaking bill is House Bill 404; this is called the Safe at Home Act. This bill for the first time in Georgia will require that landlords provide and maintain rental housing that is fit human habitation. The bill limits security deposits to the equivalent of three months rent and it provides some increased protections for tenants facing eviction. Senate Bill 222 will ban all forms of nonpublic contributions for Georgia elections.
