On Friday, January 13, the Performance Review Board appointed by the Secretary of State in 2021 issued its report to the State Election Board, acknowledging Fulton County’s work and focus on improved elections over the last two years.
The report specifically recognizes the engagement of the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections, the daily dedication and effort of Fulton County elections staff, and major improvements in staffing, training and work processes. Importantly, the report concludes that a state takeover “would not be helpful and would in fact hinder the ongoing improvements to Fulton County elections.”
Over the last two years, the Fulton County Department of Registration & Elections fully cooperated with the Performance Review Board. Staff also cooperated with the team of nonpartisan observers from the Carter Center, who spent thousands of hours observing Fulton County’s elections processes.
“The Board of Registration & Elections has operated for the last two years with a singular focus on the best possible experience for Fulton County voters,” said Cathy Woolard, Chair of the Fulton County Board of Registration & Elections. “The Performance Review Board’s report affirms what we already know – our staff work every day to serve Fulton County voters and deliver free and fair elections in compliance with the law.”
The report cites ongoing work to prepare for the 2024 Presidential Election and other future elections.
“The Performance Review Board’s report recognizes the outstanding work of our Fulton County elections team. Elections are the most important service we deliver as a county government, and we prioritized this work with our time and resources,” noted Fulton County Chairman Robb Pitts. “In the next several weeks voters will see the appointment of a permanent director and the opening of the Election Central hub. When 2024 comes, Fulton County Registration & Elections will be ready.”
On January 12, the Board of Registration & Elections recommended the appointment of Ms. Nadine Williams as permanent Director. This appointment will be considered by the Board of Commissioners in February.
This spring, the Fulton County Department of Registration & Elections will move into the Election Central Hub, which will allow it to consolidate all of its operations into one purpose-built space, further improving efficiency and operations.
