Don Geary

Don Geary came to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office from private practice at the Geary Law Firm in Lawrenceville Georgia. He was in private practice from December 2016 to May 2021, with a focus on criminal and domestic law. Prior to private practice Don was a career prosecutor, he was the Chief Assistant District Attorney in the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office from January 2013 to November 2016, the Chief Assistant District Attorney in the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office from March 2006 through December 2012, a Senior Assistant District Attorney in the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office from December 1995 through February 2006, and an Assistant District Attorney in the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office from August 1991 until December 1995.

Don has tried over 250 jury trials, over 140 bench trials, and handled over 100 appeals to the Georgia Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. In 2009 Don was awarded the Board of Directors Trial Advocacy Award by the Association of Government Attorney’s in Capital Litigation.

From the fall of 2009 to the fall of 2015, Don was an Adjunct Professor at Emory Law School teaching Advanced Evidence, Advanced Criminal Litigation, Civil Pre-trial Litigation and Cross-examination.

From 2010 until May of 2019 Don was a member of the GAEC (Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission) which sanctions all pugilistic activity in the State of Georgia, such as professional boxing and MMA. From 2015 to 2019 Don served as the Chairman of the Commission.

Don is a retired United States Marine Corps aviator. He graduated from Naval Flight School in Pensacola Florida in 1981, and currently holds a Commercial Pilots License. Don was deployed with Marine Squadron HMLA 773 to desert Storm and Desert Shield in 1990 and 1991, and was award an Air Medal and a Navy Commendation Medal while deployed.

Don earned a BA from East Carolina University in 1979, an MBA from National University in 1983, and a JD from Georgia State University School of Law in 1989.
